Abstract:Industrial scale nanostructuring via Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) can alter the properties of metals and alloys to increase their performance, extend their useful life cycles, and thereby diminish their environmental impact. Higher performance and longer lasting metals reduce the amount of natural and other resources needed for multiple applications. Thus, nanostructuring effectively increases the sustainability of using alloys to serve societal needs. We will examine the key advances in SPD-processing that have enabled industrial applications of high performance metals and alloys in various industrial sectors, including energy production and transmission, healthcare, transportation, and electronics. The evolution of scaling of speed, efficiency, and size scale of SPD production will be reviewed. We will also see how the emergence of high performance metals and alloys of aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium, and iron has been influenced by the convergence of advances in measurement science, process control, and understanding of the microstructural effects of intense shear. |
